With exceptional splendor, intense emotional charge, and a sense of pride that shone in every gaze, last weekend saw the grand celebration marking the 30th anniversary of continuous operation and contribution of the Shaolin Phoenix Center in Pyrgos, Ilia.
It was an evening no one wanted to end—one of those moments when past, present, and future come together to tell stories and renew promises. An opportunity for everyone who has been part of this unique journey to recall the first steps, to recognize the struggles, and to honor the friendships and values that were born inside the training hall.
The Heart of Shaolin Beat Strong in Pyrgos
From early in the afternoon, the venue began to fill with familiar faces: students who grew up here and are now parents themselves, little children in uniforms brimming with anticipation, old friends, and people whose lives have become intertwined with Shaolin. In every corner, groups quietly exchanged memories and stories.
The first to speak was Master Stavridis Iordanis, the founder and the soul of the association. With a voice full of emotion, he thanked everyone present—those who had been there from day one, and those who joined along the way and became family. “It’s not easy to fit 30 years into a few words. But one thing is certain: without you, none of this would be the same,” he said, and many lowered their gaze discreetly to wipe their eyes.
By his side stood Masters Kapatsoulias and Karoumpalis, together with the President of E.PO.KE.S., Katakalaios Dimitris, who, in his brief greeting, emphasized that Phoenix’s contribution to Pyrgos goes far beyond that of a martial arts school: “It is a nucleus of culture, respect, and personal growth for young and old alike.”
Among the guests, the presence of representatives and members from other Shaolin associations and schools was particularly strong: Alexandra Stavridou from Aristomachos, Efstathia Antoniou from Anemos, Andrew Banner of the White Lotus, Marios Stavrakos, Dionysis Kanavos, and Andreas Nikolopoulos from the Golden Tiger. Their presence sealed the deep camaraderie that characterizes the Shaolin arts community in the Peloponnese and reinforced the feeling of unity and shared vision.
The Moment of Recognition
A little later, in a moment full of meaning, Master Kapatsoulias undertook the role of presenting commemorative plaques to the pioneers of the association—people who stood by Master Stavridis when his vision was still in its infancy. The emotion peaked as each honoree came up to the stage, receiving not only a plaque but also a piece of the collective memory.
Master Kapatsoulias’s words were simple and profound:
“History is written by those who remain steadfast, even when everything seems uncertain. To all of you who stood beside us, a big thank you. Without you, nothing we see here today would exist.”
The audience burst into warm, prolonged applause, and for a few minutes, there was that silence that only respect and genuine appreciation can create.
Moments of Reminiscence
The most touching scene of the evening was when three former students—Giorgos Arvanitakis, Panagiotis Chrysafis, and Niki Katsaboula—shared their memories. They spoke about the first school in Pyrgos, about the teacher who taught them not only techniques but also how to stand with dignity in the face of life’s difficulties.
Their stories brought to life images of a time more innocent and more authentic. The audience listened with smiles but also with eyes that betrayed emotion.
A Buffet Full of Flavors and Memories
As the formal proceedings gave way to relaxed fellowship, all attendees gathered around the plentiful buffet, lovingly prepared. Platters of traditional dishes, delicious pies, savory treats, salads, and homemade desserts awaited to be tasted.
The aromas blended the present with the past—as many recalled similar evenings years ago, when young students impatiently waited for the demonstrations to end so they could sample the delicacies their parents had brought. Amidst the conversations, wishes could be heard, restrained laughter, and the promise that this community would remain united.
A Future That Continues
At the end of the evening, Master Stavridis spoke again. In a voice soft but assured, he said that everything built over these 30 years is both a legacy and a responsibility: to continue with the same passion and the same faith in the vision that unites them.
“The flame of Shaolin is much more than techniques and movements. It is a way of life, a way of thinking. It is the strength that helps us not to give up when everything seems difficult,” he concluded, and for a few seconds, no one spoke—only their eyes conveyed what words no longer needed to say.
The event concluded with commemorative photos, hugs, warm handshakes, and a silent promise: that the Shaolin Phoenix Center family will continue to make history in the years to come, with the same dedication, the same spirit, and the same light.
